Culture - a Leadership Campfires Series

Six week guided exploration of Culture by Julian Stodd

Our Leadership Campfire series provide an opportunity for groups of leaders to take a deep dive into curated topics within a collaborative community.

Through this process, members will construct and share ideas, and consider the practical application back into their own organisations.

Each Series consists of six episodes, covering central topics, with a focus on ’exploration’ and ’sense making’ – looking at ideas from different perspectives. The structure is built upon principles of Scaffolded Social Learning.

These are not taught sessions, but instead guided by Julian Stodd, supported with relevant research and case studies. The method of learning is dialogue in full groups and pairs.

With up to half your time spent in dialogue, these events also provide a great opportunity to network with peers.

The Culture Campfire Sessions

Each Campfire is offered on two different time slots on the Monday of each week, and attendees can choose which to attend. We also offer an elective ‘Sense Making’ follow up session on Friday lunchtimes, for anyone who wants to follow up within a supported space.

Campfire Sessions are 60 minutes, and the elective Sense Making sessions also 60 minutes.

Week 1 – Belonging
Examine how we join a culture, what it gives us, and what is the cost. We discuss the role of rituals and artefacts, as well as how we ‘believe’ in our leaders and wider organisations. The discussion will centre on the role of a leader in creating or holding culture.
Week 2 – Tribes and Trust
Delve into the role of tribal structures within culture and how trust forms and flows. The discussion is around our role in nurturing trust and how we hold difference and dissent.
Week 3 – Types of Culture
Explore the notion of ‘subscription’ cultures, as well as kinetic ones. Through discussion, we consider the multi-cultural organisation and the role of the leader as Culture Navigator.
Week 4 – Change and Culture
Examine the fracturing of culture, including both legacy structures and ‘precursor’ networks, and considering individual agency and forms of power within culture change. The discussion centres on questions of ownership, agency, and loss within the context of culture change.
Week 5 – Stories in Culture
View the Organisation as entity of story and belief. The discussion centres on the ownership of stories, and the tension between individual, collective, and organisational ones.
Week 6 – Culture Builders
Concludes the series with an exploration of the role of leaders as culture builders, with the discussion being on how we ‘curate’ our space, and the notion of ‘self and system’. This is a conversation about walking the boundaries, the things that we ‘do’, and those that we ‘enable’.
