Synopsis
Mobile technology is part of everyday life: we carry it from formal spaces of work into the social spaces around them, and it is changing how we relate to knowledge. This book explores the emergence of mobile learning and practical approaches to its design and deployment, starting from one idea: technology can make learning possible, but it doesn’t guarantee it.
It looks at what we mean by ’mobile’, at the mobile world and how people really use their devices, and at features and functions from augmented reality and video to interactivity and geolocation. It sets out the triumvirate of mobile learning (people, environment and subject) and why knowledge alone is no longer enough.
Three practical applications follow (performance support, just-in-time learning and supporting social learning), with two case studies from healthcare. It’s partly a journey to understand mobile learning, partly a practical guide to doing it yourself, and partly a map of where we might go next.
